Bernese Mountain Dog

A tri-colored dog of large size, the “Berner” is recognized by its distinctive tricolor pattern: body, neck, legs, cranium and ears black; cheeks, stockings and eyespots rich tan, toes, chest, muzzle, tail tip and blaze between the eyes white. The pattern is rigid and varies only slightly in the amount of white. A perfectly-marked individual gives the impression of a white “Swiss cross” on the chest, when viewed from the front in sitting position. The eyes are an expressive dark brown. The breed is a sturdy and heavy dog with a very weather resistant coat.

Temperament:This breed is an affectionate, loyal, faithful, and intelligent dog that makes an excellent family pet. They love children and are easy to train. They may remain puppy-like for awhile because they are slow to mature. The Bernese loves to be around people and should be left alone outside.
Size:Height: 24-28 inches Weight: 85-110 lbs.
Living Conditions:This breed is relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. They prefer cooler climates due to their thick coats.
OriginThe breed originated in Swiss farm villages where it was used in herding livestock, as a drover, in pulling carts containing milk cans and farm goods, and in watching over the farm. It nearly disappeared in the late 1800s but was rescued around the turn of the century by a determined Swiss cynologist, Franz Schertenleib.
Health Issues:The Bernese Mountain Dog is a hardy breed. They may be prone to hip and elbow dysplasisa, cancer, bloat and eyelid problems.
ExerciseNeeds regular daily exercise.
GroomingThe thick coat of this dog should be brushed daily to weekly. They are seasonal shedders and extra care should be taken during this time.

The Bernese Mountain Dog makes a great family pet and will be a friend for life. hey are extremely loyal, alert, cheerful and good-natured. They should be well socialized as puppies, but are easy to train. They are sensitive so should be trained gently. Its talents include tracking, herding, watchdogging, guarding, search and rescue, carting and competitive obedience.
