Bearded Collie

The Bearded Collie or "Beardie" is a medium-sized herding dog with a shaggy coat and ever-wagging tail. The Beardie has a broad head, short muzzle and a shaggy coat all over his body, even under his chin. Tje outer coat is waterproof and dense while the undercoat is thick and soft. The color of the coat changes over the life of the dog. Puppies are generally brown, black, fawn or blue. This dog is an active and hardy breed.

Temperament:The Bearded Collie is an affectionate and charming dog. They make the perfect companion for a child. He is playful and lively and do not like to be left alone. They are a high energy dog that are noisy barkers. Obedience is a must since they can be headstrong at times.
Size:Height: 20-22 inches Weight: 40-60 lbs.
Living Conditions:This breed will do best in at least a medium-sized yard. They can sleep outdoors and make excellent farm dogs. It does not like to be confined and should have a place to run around. They prefer to be outdoors.
OriginIt is believed that in the 17th Century the Polish Lowland Sheepdog was bred into the local Scottish dogs, to give the typical appearance of the working strain of beardie, and that in the 20th Century Old English Sheepdog may have been bred in to produce the longer coat of the typical show beardie. The Bearded Collie was used to herd both sheep and cattle. As such it is essentially a working dog, bred to be hardy and reliable, able to stand up to the harshest conditions, and the toughest sheep.
Health Issues: Generally a healthy breed. May be prone to hip dysplasia. Their dense coat may conceal external parasite infestation.
ExerciseNeeds a lot of exercise because of its active nature.
GroomingDaily grooming of the long shaggy coat is important. Mist the coat lightly with water before you begin. Tease out mats as you find them and use the coat sparingly. Eyes and paws should be checked daily. Check for ticks regularly. This breed is an average shedder.

The Beardie is a high energy dog that is extremely affectionate. Males tend to be bold and outgoing, whicl females tend to be calmer and more submissive. They are not watch dogs since they have such a love for people. They are very trainable for many activities. They are a natural herder of people and animals. They can be headstrong so must be trained. The Beardie's talents are tracking, herfing, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks.
