Beagle

A Beagle is a medium-sized dog and a member of the hound group. They have a similar appearance to Foxhounds but are smaller with shorter legsand softer ears. They are scent hounds used primarily for hunting rabbits to larger hares. This breed does not like to be left alone so consider buying two if you'll be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that can be somewhat distrurbing to neighbors. They have a tendency to follow their own noses and may take off in exploration.

Temperament:The Beagle is a dog that loves everyone. They are sweet, gentle, sociable and intelligent. They are excellent with children and love to be around people or other canines. They shold not be trusted with non-canine pets unless socialized with them at a young age. Beagles have a mind of their own and may need consistent firm training.
Size:Height: 14-16 inches Weight: 22-25 lbs.
Living Conditions:Beagles need plenty of exercise outdoors. They are also active indoors but an apartment or small yard will suffice for this breed.
OriginThis breed most likely originated as a cross between Harrier and other hounds in England. The Beagle serves as an excellent narcotics detection dog and makes a great family companion.
Health Issues:This breed can be prone to heart disease, epilepsy, eye and back problems. Also prone to chondroplasia, aka dwarfism.
ExerciseBeagles need a good amount of exercise daily such as a brisk walk or a chance to run around in a yard.
GroomingThe short smooth coat is easy to maintain. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe with mild soap only when necessary. Check the ears regularly for signs of infection and keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.

The Beagle has a medium length muzzle, gumdrop nose, large round brown or hazel eyes, low set ears and a broad chest. They appear in a range of colors. Two color varieties are always white with colored areas, including such colors as "lemon", a very light tan, reddish and "liver" which is a darker brown. Beagles are born black and white with the brownish areas developing later.
