Anatolian Shepherd Dog

The Antolian Shephard Dog is a large, noble guardian dog. The head is large but in good proportion with the rest of the body. The skull is wide and slightly rounded with pendant ears that are small with rounded tips. The small, deep-set eyes range from gold to brown in color. Lever colored dogs have brown eye rims and a brown nose. Nose and eye rims for all other dogs should be black. The short, rough coat is generally fawn with a black mask, though any color is acceptable. There are two basic coat types: medium length and medium long.

Temperament:This dog is not for beginners as it is independent and forceful. It is loyal and alert, calm and brave. This breed is affectionate to its owner but suspicious of strangers. This Anatolian Shepherd is possessive to its home and property. Training should begin early because it becomes too strong and big as an adult. They are patient with children but may knock them down due to their size.

Living Conditions:This breed is not recommended for apartement life. They are most of the time inactive indoorsand will do best in a large yard. They need a secured, fenced yard due to their suspicion of strangers.
OriginThe breed's ancestors most likely migrated to the area now known as Turkey about 1000 AD with Turkic-speaking people, although it is probable that dogs similar to this existed at least 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Over the centuries, slight regional variations began to develop, although the dogs were collectively known as coban kopegi, i.e. \"shepherd dog\". In the 1970s, breeders began focusing on specific regions and working on developing standard breeds for each of the regions; the Anatolian is one of those breeds, coming from central Turkey.
Health Issues:Some are prone to eyelid entropion or to hypothyroidism. They are sensitive to anesthesia. They should be given extra vaccinations against parvo-virus.
ExerciseThey should be able to run free as they will exercise as much as they need given the space. They need a good amount of exercise daily.
GroomingThis breed requires little grooming. During the twice a year shedding season, brushing is required. They are a seasonal heavy shedder.

Owners of dogs of this breed must determinedly socialize the dogs to turn them into appropriate companions. They are intelligent and can learn quickly but might choose not to obey; this is not generally a dog for a beginning or shy owner. They become very protective of other animals in the household, and will treat them as their "flock".
