American Eskimo Dog

The American Eskimo, often referred to as the "Eskie" can be found in white or white & cream with brown eyes with a compact body. These dogs look like a smaller version of the Samoyed and come in three varieties: toy, miniature and standard. The Eskie has a beautiful snowy white coat which creates a ruff or mane around the neck, especially in males. They thrive on being part of the human family.

Temperament:American Eskimos are companion dogs that are intelligent, well-socialized, affectionate and loving. They are great with children and are easy to train. This breed can behanve like puppies up until the age of two. They make excellent watchdogs to announce the presence of strangers.
Size:Toy: 9-12 inches, 6-10 lbs. Miniature: over 12 up to 15 inches, 10-20 lbs Standard: over 15 inches up to 19 inches, 18-35 lbs.
Living Conditions:This is a very active indoor dog. It needs sufficient exercise to mainitain its average weight and continue being obedient. A small yard is a sufficient for exercise.
OriginThe American Eskimo is most likely derived from the German Spitz, the Finnish Spitz, the Pomeranian, the Keeshond and possibly the Samoyed.
Health Issues:American Eskimos are prone to hip dysplasia and oregressive retinal atrophy. Dermitis can occur if now kept clean of fleas.
ExerciseThe American Eskimo should be exercised on a leash or in safely enclosed yard. They love to be walked.
GroomingThe thick snowy white coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush twice a week. When it is shedding it needs to be brushed daily. Average shedder.

This Eskie is a hardy dog with a lot of energy. They are playful and love to be around people. They are easily trained and often rank among the top scoreers in obeidience trials. This breed needs a lot of attention and should be socialized through dog sports or obedience training.
