Akita

The Akita is the largest of the Japanese Spitz-type breeds, named for Akita Prefecture, where it is thought to have originated. This breed is renowned for its fierce love, loyalty and obedience to its owner. Akitas come in four colors: Red Fawn, Sesame (Red Fawn with black tips), Brindle and White. All except white must have whitish hair on the sides of the muzzle, on the cheeks, the neck, chest, body and tail. The Pinto color is not accepted as a Japanese Akita color, only as an American Akita color. Some breeders in the US mix the original Japanese Akita with the heavier American type which is larger, shorter in fure and allows for more colors. The original Akita Inu is now simply called the Akita and the American Akita can be referred to the Great Japanese Dog (GJD).
